The Social Media Risks for Academics

I attended the Canadian Association of University Teacher’s Council over the weekend and one of the take aways for me is just how risky it is for academics to maintain a social media presence. University administrators are willing to use as evidence against you any kind of comment that you make on FB, for example, or even if someone else posts a gender/race/etc-based offensive comment on your page without your knowledge or consent. In this time of new politically correct codes of conduct imposed by university administrators this can and does happen. If an administration is out to get you because you criticize them too closely to the bone and/or too publicly they will use your social media posts/tweets etc against you. So all academics need to be careful. I am beginning to think that it is now time for me to be off social media. So if I disappear, again, this is the reason why.
