My experience of this is that academics need to sound greatly more intelligent to each other and than the person on the street. A lot of insecurity here. Also, sometimes the ideas they are presenting are derivative or just not very interesting so baffling with bullshit is a strategy. Using clear language in the active voice is a skill that is forgotten by many academics after they get out of grad school. Simplicity in writing is not a sign of intellectual weakness; it is a sign of intellectual strength. It is also very useful if you have any intentions of speaking to people beyond the small numbers who read academic journals. If you want to be a public intellectual you need to be understood by the public. Many academics have a hard time with this. They hide in academia because of social ineptitude. I have seen all of these and they teach their students theses errors. I have to break them of all of these when they come to me.
